Dr. Sal Martingano

Dr. Sal personifies the essence of that lost American lifestyle. His upbringing was one of self-reliance, trust, and adventure. Boy Scouts taught early leadership skills that later proved invaluable in providing community service projects that encouraged independent thinking and entrepreneurship opportunities for young adults. Lessons Learned

Success Depends On
Mastering The Doing

Failure is a part of the success process since one can never appreciate success unless one experiences the lessons of failure. As a first-wave baby boomer, growing up without the benefits of modern technology, “trying” was not an option. Success depended on mastering the “doing”, and second chances were rare. Those were the lessons learned as a card-carrying Italian boy from Bensonhurst Brooklyn, in the ’50s. Being able to fail without ridicule allowed for developing educational and economic successes, based on self-reliance and strong family bonds; traits disappearing in today’s America.

Brooklyn, NY 1964

A Different America

It’s been more than 60 years since Sal and his “Pack of Six” roamed the streets of Bensonhurst on bikes, fishing the piers, playing sewer ball, and enjoying America as it was meant to be; raw, exciting and filled with adventure. But that America came with a price. In 1964, Sal recalled a turning point in America’s history. A time of uncertainty where boys were forced to become men by having their birthdate be the deciding factor if they were going to be called to serve their country in the Vietnam war. Just before Sal’s 19th birthday, his number was pulled, along with his best friend Pete and 3 other members of the Pack of Six. That night, while Sal sat in front of the TV with his family, time slowed to a near standstill as he heard the date read allowed off a draft lottery ping pong ball, “July 8th”….

Fate Had A Different Plan

The Great Awakening

Fate had a different plan for Sal to serve his country. Education became his training and teaching became his weapon. Dr. Sal earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from City University of New York (CCNY) and continued to earn two Master’s degrees from CCNY in Education, and Administration & Supervision. Due to the war, teachers were a scarce commodity, and at 21, while still a graduate student, Sal entered the school system as an industrial arts teacher.

But the America that Sal knew was changing right before his eyes. Socialism began to show its face, and he found himself at a crossroads. Teachers’ Unions were on the rise, and Al Shankar, President of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) convinced the teachers of New York City that they deserved a raise and should strike. At the time the mayor passed an executive action barring all city employees from striking. But for 11 days, Sal and his fellow teachers took to the streets in protest, and on the 12th day, the strike was settled. Teachers ended up with a mere $1 raise, with the good news that they weren’t going to be sued for striking. Two years later, Sal found out that Al Shankar had made a deal with the City of New York. By forcing teachers to strike, they could postpone their salaries for 12 days which would help the city avoid bankruptcy. You see, it had nothing to do with teacher’s rights at all, and this was Sal’s first great awakening. Against the wishes of his father and peers, Sal abruptly ended his teaching career, leaving behind a city pension and a past that would eventually become the foundation for his future.
